The Bridgeport Arts Fest is returning for the third year this weekend, with artists, performers, community organizers all along for the ride. In addition to live performances from musical acts such as Kung Fu (see video above) and Party Horse, artists will be selling their wares and offering up demonstrations. The daylong fair takes place throughout Saturday, July 7, at McLevy Green in downtown Bridgeport.
If it is an outdoor celebration you seek, the 26th annual New England Arts & Crafts Festival is set to take place on Saturday in Milford, complete with art, theater and musical performances. Orange, meanwhile, will be celebrating its 190th birthday with a concert, fireworks and musical performances.
There will be plenty of musical acts, too, making their way to stages large and small. Cheap Trick will visit the Klein in Bridgeport. Nashville Drive makes its way to the Wilton Library. Sarah McLachlan brings a new symphonic sound to Foxwoods. John Mayall and Ben Taylor are set to play at the Ridgefield Playhouse this weekend, with the Royal Southern Brotherhood arriving there next week. The English Beat bops into Fairfield. Summer Jam Live comes to Stepping Stones Museum for Children. The Scorpions and Tesla will rock it out in Uncasville.
There are a number of outdoor musical programs planned too. John Pizzarelli opens up the Jazz up July series in Stamford on July 11. Stamford’s Bartlett Arboretum continues its Sunday music series. A sixties show and Gunsmoke comes to the City Center bandshell in Danbury this weekend. And, Matisyahu (aka Matthew Paul Miller) will bring his unique sound to Stamford’s Alive@Five series next Thursday.
If you are looking to catch some theater this weekend, you will want to consider Yale Summer Cabaret’s “The Secret in the Wings.” There is “The Music Man” at Westchester Broadway Theatre, “I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti,” at TheaterWorks in Hartford. The Ivoryton Playhouse is staging “Hairspray—The Broadway Musical.” “Smokey Joe’s Cafe” is at the Emelin Theater. “My Fair Lady” plays to the crowds in New Canaan. “Brigadoon” is in Danbury; “Brighton Beach Memoirs” is in Newtown; and a reading of “The Civil War Letters of Captain David Hoag” is in Sherman. And, Shakespeare on the Sound finishes up its run of “Romeo and Juliet” in Greenwich before moving to Rowayton later this month.
Summer is a good time for movies, too. “David and Lisa,” will be shown in Ridgefield. The Avon Theatre in Stamford is the place you can catch “Cape Spin: An American Power Struggle.” (See trailer below.)
For kids, the Stamford Museum and Nature Center have a number of afternoon, drop-in programs to keep kids entertained. The Bruce Museum is hosting a “Look and See” event for young visitors as part of its Olympic-flavored exhibit. And, Jim West is bringing his puppets to the Palace Theatre in Stamford.
Whatever you do this weekend, it’s going to be a hot one.
